Apple Hotel Directory

Traveling Apple employees were not using the Hotel Directory to find lodging for their trips; instead, they were  using third-party travel sites. We saw this as an opportunity to increase user adoption by making it easier for travelers to find more cost-effective hotels in the Hotel Directory.

What is the Hotel Directory

The Hotel Directory is a web app managed by the Apple Travel Team to help traveling Apple employees (“Travelers”) find hotels for their stay. It highlights hotels that have a partnership with Apple to provide better rates, rooms, and services.

Adoption rate was a lagging indicator, so we focused on what leading indicators we could test for the design process.

Our research found that travelers are not as price-focused as they were convenience and amenity-driven. This led us to put more weight on surfacing amenities and adding key location search (ie hotel distance to Apple Facilities).

Foundations

I identified all the use cases and workflows we wanted this new design to support and validated it with the Apple Travel Team.
Through competitor analysis and pencil sketching, I was able to get the leadership and devs aligned on the shape the designs would take and how travelers would interact with the final product.

Initial design struggled with information weighting, prioritizing price over amenities. Research showed amenities were more useful information, so it was redesigned to put more focus on those.

The review table was not easy to parse, causing travelers to struggle to choose the best hotel for them. We adjusted the UI and added the ability to save the best hotel for later review.

After implementing the changes above and a few others, we tested the new designs to see if we moved the needle at all.
